Aussie Jefferis Closes in on Olympic Berth
(5 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)

Six-time world team member Joshua Jefferis (Queensland) is one step closer to an Olympic berth after winning the 2012 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Sydney.

Joshua Jefferis (Queensland)

Jefferis, the 2005 and 2008 champion, claimed his third senior national title. He scored 87.697 to win comfortably over three-time Japanese Olympian Naoya Tsukahara (85.398), living in Queensland since 2009. Defending champion Luke Wiwatowski (Victoria) won the bronze (85.032).

At January's qualification event, Jefferis and Queensland teammate Thomas Pichler both scored high enough all-around totals to qualify to this summer's Olympic Games in London, though Australia can only send one male gymnast. Pichler placed sixth only in Sydney, making it more likely that the selection committee will affirm Jefferis as its Olympic nominee.

"It feels so surreal," said Jefferis, the 2006 Commonwealth Games champion. "It's certainly a dream come true. I was the most nervous I've been heading into a competition, even more than when I was the top seed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Fortunately it went my way tonight."

Queensland swept the junior all-around medals. Lachlan Savill scored 77.765 to take the gold over 2010 Youth Olympian Brody-Jai Hennessy (76.898) and Kristian Wan (75.399).

World medalist Prashanth Sellathurai impressed in Saturday's finals with gold medals on both pommel horse and still rings. As a specialist, Sellathurai was unable to claim an individual berth to the Olympic Games, finishing out of the medals at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo.

Competition concludes Sunday in Sydney with the women's junior and senior apparatus finals.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
