Absent from the recent world gymnastics championships, U.S. star Rebecca Bross told IG she is steadily regaining strength following surgery for a dislocated kneecap.
U.S. star Rebecca Bross, pictured in September, says she plans to be back "100 percent" after August knee surgery.
"The surgery went well," she said. "Everything was repaired and it's healing well."
Bross, the 2010 U.S. champion, injured the knee on vault in August, at the second day of competition at the U.S. championships in St. Paul.
"At first I wasn't sure what had happened, then I realized I had dislocated my kneecap," she said of the accident.
Bross had been struggling on the double-twisting Yurchenko in practice, spawning criticism after the injury that she should have watered down the vault to a single twist. But Bross said she has not been plagued by regrets in hindsight.
"The double is what I had been training and what I have always vaulted," she said. "We just need to fix my vaulting technique."
Doctors determined surgery was necessary after Bross returned to Plano, Texas, where she trains at World Olympic Gymnastics Academy.
"My kneecap was very unstable because the tissue that holds it securely in place was torn," said Bross, who underwent surgery Aug. 25.
Bross has won six world championships medals, including back-to-back all-around medals in 2009 (silver) and 2010 (bronze). She missed the world championships that concluded Sunday in Tokyo, where the U.S. women won their first team gold in four years.
The 18 year old is currently hard at work recovering for 2012, hoping to rejoin the U.S. team lineup at the Olympic Games in London.
"I started rehab the week after surgery and will continue until my range of motion and strength returns to normal," she said. "I should be able to start some elementary [tumbling] within the next 30 days to build leg strength, and vaulting will come later."
Bross, who experienced an outpouring of online support from fans after her injury, is confident of what her fans can expect from her in 2012.
"To be back 100 percent and to do my best," she told IG.
