Izbasa Out of Worlds with Foot Injury

Olympic gold medalist Sanda Izbasa is out of the upcoming world championships because of foot pain.

The Romanian delegation left Friday for Tokyo without Olympic champion Sandra Izbasa, who has been suffering from foot pain.

Izbasa, who won vault and floor exercise at April's European championships, was replaced on Romania's world team by Daniela Andrei. Izbasa suffered a torn Achilles' tendon prior to the 2009 World Championships. She skipped the Romanian nationals in August, but competed vault at a recent dual meet against Great Britain.

"We do not want to push her, she was in pain," women's head coach Octavian Bellu told a Romanian newspaper. "She really wanted it, but could not. This is a big loss — her contribution to vault and floor was crucial for the team, but we must adapt. We would worsen her injury [by pushing her]."

The 2011 World Championships begin Oct. 7 in Tokyo. The Romanian women's team consists of Diana Chelaru, Raluca Haidu, Catalina Ponor, Ana Porgras, Amelia Racea and Andrei, with Diana Bulimar the alternate.

I prefer Izbasa's work over Ponor's work. I wonder if Octavian will put both the old-timers back on the Olympic team? Chelaru, Haidu and Porgras belong on the team...That only leaves two spots for Racea, Izbasa and Ponor....?

I'm so sad...
I can't think what Sandra is thinking now.
She really want the world floor medal, the only one she can't reach.
At the Euros she was back and this injury isn't good smilies/sad.gif

Good Luck Romania...
Sandra's injury means a big loss for the Romanian team, in spite of the depth they have achieved in FX, she would have been a real contender for the title. Anyway, I think they should have taken Sandra with the team, for moral support and cheering up, it's known that the sole presence of a big name among the girls always rise the team spirit! Get well soon Sandra!
