Olympic gold medalist Sanda Izbasa is out of the upcoming world championships because of foot pain.
The Romanian delegation left Friday for Tokyo without Olympic champion Sandra Izbasa, who has been suffering from foot pain.
Izbasa, who won vault and floor exercise at April's European championships, was replaced on Romania's world team by Daniela Andrei. Izbasa suffered a torn Achilles' tendon prior to the 2009 World Championships. She skipped the Romanian nationals in August, but competed vault at a recent dual meet against Great Britain.
"We do not want to push her, she was in pain," women's head coach Octavian Bellu told a Romanian newspaper. "She really wanted it, but could not. This is a big loss — her contribution to vault and floor was crucial for the team, but we must adapt. We would worsen her injury [by pushing her]."
The 2011 World Championships begin Oct. 7 in Tokyo. The Romanian women's team consists of Diana Chelaru, Raluca Haidu, Catalina Ponor, Ana Porgras, Amelia Racea and Andrei, with Diana Bulimar the alternate.
