![]() Steven Legendre (Oklahoma) earned the high score on floor exercise at the first day of the Winter Cup, held Thursday in Las Vegas. The U.S. men kicked off their 2010 season Thursday with the first day of the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas. Oklahoma's Chris Brooks leads the all-around (88.300), with high scores of the day on vault (16.300) and high bar (15.600). 2008 Olympic silver and bronze medalist Jonathan Horton (86.500) placed second to his former Oklahoma teammate. Horton, the 2009 U.S. national champion, hit his best event, high bar, for 15.150 but took scores in the 13s on floor exercise, pommel horse and parallel bars. Steven Legendre (Oklahoma) was the top gymnast on floor exercise (15.200), where he was a finalist at the 2009 World Championships in London. World team member Danell Leyva was third (86.100), also with three scores in the 13s. Stanford's Tim Gentry (85.600) and the U.S. Olympic Training Center's Jacob Bateman (85.350) rounded out the top five. World and Olympic bronze medalist Sasha Artemev (5280 Gymnastics) returned to competition on all but still rings and vault, scoring between 12.400 and 13.500. 2008 Olympic teammate Kevin Tan (Penn State) also made a comeback with a four-event run, earning a high of 14.750 on parallel bars. Former Cuban world team member Charles Leon Tamayo, competing as a guest, scored 13.100 on floor exercise and 15.8 on vault. Tamayo, who defected to the U.S. during the 2003 Worlds in Anaheim, is seeking U.S. citizenship. The Winter Cup is an annual reranking competition for the U.S. men, with spots on the national team up for grab.
