2008 Olympic all-around finalist Kristyna Palesova (Czech Republic) told IG this week that she plans to enjoy Christmas week— despite knee surgery set for Monday.
Palesova, who placed 21st all-around at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, injured her right knee during podium training at the world championships in October. She said illness and a long wait for an appointment delayed her surgery.
"I did my last dismount from beam and fell badly, and my knee went inside," the 18-year-old Palesova said. "It didn't look so bad after about week, so we were waiting about three weeks to see how it was going to be. But it was still the same, so my doctor sent me for arthroscopy. He couldn't tell exactly what it is."
Despite the injury, Palesova said she wants to resume her career as quickly as possible.
"I really love gymnastics, and all the stuff around it," said Palesova, who trains under coach Katerina Janeckova at Sokol Brno I club. "I realized that I can't live without it. And, of course, to see great gymnasts all over the world motivates me to start again."
Palesova, who tied for seventh place all-around at the 2007 European Championships and placed 20th all-around at the 2007 Worlds, said she might also try for the 2012 Olympics in London.
"I would like to focus on London, but it will be little bit harder to qualify there, because we don't have that good of a team like in Stuttgart 2007 (world championships)," she said. "For 2010, I just have to recover from my injury. I would like to compete in the European championships (April 28-May 2 in Birmingham), and of course the main goal is the world championships (October 17-24 in Rotterdam)."
Palesova said she is also looking forward to graduating high school in May, and plans to study architecture at university.
Monday's surgery should not ruin Palesova's holiday plans, however.
"We celebrate Christmas as is usual in our country," Palesova said. "So we eat carp and potato salad, get presents after dinner, and then enjoy the time we are together."
Palesova said her father, sister and brother will then visit relatives in Slovakia. "I have to stay at home, because I will be after surgery," she said. "So my mom will stay with me."
New Year's Eve may or may not mean celebration, she said.
"I think I will stay at home," Palesova said. "I don't know yet, because I will see how I am going to look after the surgery!"
Palesova said her new year's resolutions for 2010 are simple, and relate to her life in and out of the gym.
"After my whole year of injuries and something like that, I just want to be healthy and happy," she told IG. "These are the most important things for me now!"
