German superstar Fabian Hambüchen suffered an ankle injury Sunday in London during podium training for this week's world gymnastics championships.

Hambüchen, the reigning world champion on high bar and 2009 European all-around champion, rolled his left ankle performing a 2 1/2 twist on floor exercise.

The 21-year-old Hambüchen left the O2 Arena on crutches, and went to the hospital for X-rays to determine the extent of the injury.

Hambüchen had been expected to challenge for medals in the all-around, floor exercise and high bar. He won the all-around bronze at the 2006 Worlds and silver in 2007.

The 2009 World Gymnastics Championships begin Tuesday in London. Stay tuned to IG Online for live updates, news, photo galleries and more.
