The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, the IOC voted on Friday at its congress in Copenhagen.

In the final round of voting, Rio de Janeiro was awarded the Olympics over Madrid, Spain.

Chicago was eliminated in the first round, followed by Tokyo in the second round. Tokyo, site of the 1964 Olympics, was the only city of the four finalists to have played host to the Olympics.

The 2016 Olympic Games will be the first held in South America.

"It is a time to address this imbalance," Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in his address. "It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country."

Did the IOC make the right choice? Where will gymnastics be in 2016? Leave a comment below!

I'm going to be honest...I was disappointed. But this is such a great opportunity for the people of Rio to show off their city and beautiful natural sources. I'm happy and I wish them good luck in presenting a great Olympic program in 2016.

Congratulations
I am proud of the Olympic Committee for making the right choice and not being brow-beaten by star power. It's a shame the Olympics have not been to South America and it's about time to correct that.

I am glad Rio won it but the way they cheated to win it is disgusting. Not that the same thing wouldn't have happened in favor of the US. The logical choice was a place that had never had it before but cheating to win it is pathetic.

The IOC should be ashamed.

I am happy that Rio was selected to host the games for 2016. This is what the games are about to begin with is to show the athletes from all over the world. It is really nice that a new country that never hosted the games before get the opportunity to do so.

oooh.. let's watch the host city displace thousands of people so corporations can gauge visitors and the G8 countries can give each other medals.

Hope the US learns
It's great that Rio won but I do hope the US will learn from Chicago's failed bid (ousted round one). The IOC does not want a repeat of Atlanta -- partisan, egocentric, over-commercialized. Chicago resembled Atlanta too much -- starting with the emblem: Rio had an open heart, Madrid an open hand, Tokyo a ribbon tying together the continents; Chicago had a star -- says "egocentric" right there. Taking Oprah along (the symbol of overbearing wealth and power) was the wrong move. The next US bid needs to portray a venue that is open-minded and embraces athletes from the whole world. (The "we are # one" attitude will not win the IOC's favor.)

This will definitely be an exciting event for Brazil, however I'm concerned about this considering what happened at the 2007 Pan Am games. Just watch Peng Peng Li and Charlotte Mackie's beam routines on youtube. There were people in the crowd whistling and screaming during gymnasts acrobatic series in hopes to distract them. Laughing at them when they fell...this can be very dangerous. I just hope this isn't something typical and won't happen at the Olympics.
